This is such an easy-peasy recipe for freshly baked bread anytime, every time. I do have my go-to bread rolls recipe that I was loyal to for many years. But yesterday when my boys announced that they would be watching the movie Bright, on Netflix, I thought instead to make these quick bread rolls. These are fast and with some filling for them to enjoy while watching the movie.
Truth be told, I was toooo lazy to open my recipe book! I did a quick search on Pinterest and found this interesting recipe here. With my years of experience of baking breads, I could make out that this recipe would work. I just took the base recipe and did my own seasonings to make it as per my what my boys like. It is simple to make, tastes amazing and foolproof.
- All purpose flour - 250 grams
- garlic salt / plain salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Dry yeast - 1 1/2 teaspoon
- Pizza or pasta seasoning - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 150ml to 200 ml
- Vegetable oil / olive oil - 3 teaspoon
- Filling: -
- Cheddar cheese, grated - 150 grams
- Red chilly powder - 1 teaspoon or as per your taste
Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add 150 ml of lukewarm water and 3 teaspoons of oil. Mix with a fork to moisten the dry ingredients. Cover and leave for 15 minutes to allow the flour to absorb moisture.
Now knead it for 5 minutes just like how you would a soft chapatti dough. Add more water if needed. It should be slightly tacky to touch.
Grease another bowl with oil and put the kneaded dough in it. Cover it with cling film and leave it to rise for an hour or till it doubles in volume. Press it down lightly and make 8 – 10 balls of uniform size.
Mix the filling ingredients and fill each ball with a tablespoon of this mixture. Seal the seams by pressing – ensure that they are well closed and rounded.
Prepare an 8” round cake pan by greasing with shortening. Put these rounds inside it leaving an inch of space between them to allow them to rise during the proofing. Loosely cover it with cling film and leave it to rise. This step will take approximately an hour depending on the temperature of the environment.
After a period of 20 minutes preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
Once the bread rolls have expanded and risen they will stick to each other. That’s when you know that they are ready to go into the oven. Bake them for 30 minutes or until honey golden. On touching them they will feel empty from within.
Bring them out and brush them with some melted butter. Serve hot.
